The poetry of earth is never dead:
When all the birds are faint with the hot sun,
And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run

From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead;
That is the Grasshopper’s–he takes the lead
In summer luxury,–he has never done
With his delights; for when tired out with fun
He rests at ease beneath some pleasant weed.

The poetry of earth is ceasing never:
On a lone winter evening, when the frost
Has wrought a silence, from the stove there shrills
The Cricket’s song, in warmth increasing ever,
And seems to one in drowsiness half lost,
The Grasshopper’s among some grassy hills.

 

 

여치와 귀뚜라미에 대하여

존 키츠

 

자연의 운율(韻律)은 결코 죽지 않았다
태양 열기로 새들 모두 축 늘어졌는데,
하지만 시원한 나무 그늘에 숨어라,
너의 목소리를 회복할 것이다.

갓 수확한 꿀 술을 이 울타리에서 저 울타리로,
필시 여치 들일 거다. 저기 그들이 활동을 한다
여름을 사치품으로 생각한 적이 한 번도 없을 것이다
그저 즐거워서, 지쳤을 때를 대비해서 재미로,
그리고 시원한 풀 숲에서 휴식을 취하고 있다

자연의 운율(韻律)은 결코 멈추지 않는다.
서리 내린 겨울 저녁에
난로에서 타닥이는 소리가 고요한 침묵을 깨운다
귀뚜라미 노랫소리가 온기를 더욱 부추기고 있다
졸음에 겨운 사람은 반쯤 정신줄을 놓은 것 같고,
귀뚜라미 집은 풀숲 무성한 언덕 사이에 있다.
