本田俊程 .누군가의 어머니

그 여자는 늙고 헐벗은 잿빛으로

겨울날 추위 속 구부린 몸이 위태로워 보이고
최근 들어 내린 눈으로 거리는 젖어 있었다
여자의 걸음은 늙고 더디었다

그녀는 건널목에 서서 오랜 시간 머물렀다
홀로, 무관심한 군중들 틈에 끼어 있지만
무심하게 그녀를 지나쳐간 사람들
그녀의 불안한 눈빛에도 귀 기울이는 사람은 없었다

너무 늙어 잿빛으로 물든 여자를
지나쳐 가는 사람들 뿐
아무도 그녀에게 도움의 손길을 내밀지 않았다
너무 온순하고, 소심하고, 두려움에 떨고 있다

나는 그녀 옆에 서서 낮게 속삭였다
"건너갈 수 있도록 도와줄게요"
그녀는 누군가의 어머니이다
어머니 생각에 하늘을 응시한다
여자들의 슬픈 운명을 생각하면서.

The woman was old and ragged and gray

And bent with the chill of the Winter’s day.
The street was wet with a recent snow
And the woman’s feet were aged and slow.

She stood at the crossing and waited long,
Alone, uncared for, amid the throng
Of human beings who passed her by
Nor heeded the glance of her anxious eyes.

Past the woman so old and gray
Hastened the children on their way.
Nor offered a helping hand to her –
So meek, so timid, afraid to stir

He paused beside her and whispered low,
“I’ll help you cross, if you wish to go.”.
“She’s somebody’s mother, boys, you know,
I stare at the sky while thinking of mother.
Thinking of the sad fate of women.
