Awareness About Our Environment
Natasha Trethewey

Broken bottles and charred pieces of glass,
Wadded up newspapers tossed on the grass,
Pouring of concrete and tearing out trees.
This is the environment that surrounds me?

Poisons and insecticides sprayed on our food,
Oceans filling with thick oil crude.
All sea life destined to a slow, awful doom.
These are the things we are to consume?

Mills pumping out iron, expelling yellow fumes,
Airlines emitting caustic gases from fuels,
Weapons of destruction tested at desolate sites.
And this is the air that's to sustain life?

There has to be something that someone can do,
Like raise the awareness to those around you
That if we don't heed the problem at hand
It's your life that's at stake, the destruction of man.


환경에 대한 인식  by 나타샤 트레더위

깨진 병과 새까맣게 그을린 유리 조각들
헝클어져 풀밭을 나뒹구는 신문지
나무들을 잘라내고 콘크리트를 채웁니다
이것이 나를 둘러싸고 있는 환경이라니?

독극물과 살충제가 음식에 뿌려졌고 
굳어버린 원유가 떠다니는 바다
모든 해양 생물은 느리고 끔찍한 운명을 맞게 됩니다
이것들이 우리가 소비해야 할 것들입니까?

제철소에서는 쇠를 뽑아내고 노란 연기를 내뿜고
연료에서 부식성 가스를 내뿜는 항공사들
황량한 곳에서 파괴용 무기들을 시험합니다
이것이 생명을 유지하기 위한 공기입니까?

누군가는 할 수 있는 일이 있어야 하고
주변 사람들에게 경각심을 갖게 하듯이
우리가 당면한 문제에 주의를 기울이지 않는다면
위험에 처한 것은 생명 모두와 인간의 파멸입니다
