To the New Year
With what stillness at last
you appear in the valley
your first sunlight reaching down
to touch the tips of a few
high leaves that do not stir
as though they had not noticed
and did not know you at all
then the voice of a dove calls
from far away in itself
to the hush of the morning

so this is the sound of you
here and now whether or not
anyone hears it this is
where we have come with our age
our knowledge such as it is
and our hopes such as they are
invisible before us
untouched and still possible

모든 것이 뒤바뀌어 질서를 잃을지라고
성진의 운행만은 변하지 않는 법도를 지니나니
또 삼벽예순날이 다 가고 사람 사는 땅 위에
새해 새 아침이 열려오누나

처음도 없고 끝도 없는
이 영겁의 둘레를
뉘라서 짐짓 한 토막 짤라
새해 첫날이라 이름지었던가

뜻 두고 이루지 못하는 한은
태초 이래로 있었나보다
다시 한번 의욕을 불태워
스스로를 채찍질하라고
그 불퇴전의 결의를 위하여
새아침은 오는가.

낡은 것과 새 것을 의와 불의를
삶과 죽음을 ㅡ
그것만을 생각하다가 또 삼백예순날은가리라
굽이치는 산맥 위에 보랏빛 하늘이 열리듯이
출렁이는 파도 위에 이글이글 태양이 솟듯이
그렇게 열리라 또 그렇게 솟으라
꿈이여!
