NO mortal thing enthralled these longing eyes
When perfect peace in thy fair face I found;
But far within, where all is holy ground,
My soul felt Love, her comrade of the skies:
For she was born with God in Paradise;
Nor all the shows of beauty shed around

This fair false world her wings to earth have bound:
Unto the Love of Loves aloft she flies.
Nay, things that suffer death, quench not the fire

Of deathless spirits; nor eternity,

 

Serves sordid Time, that withers all things rare.

Not love but lawless impulse is desire:
That slays the soul; our love makes still more fair
Our friends on earth, fairer in death on high.

이 갈망하는 눈빛을 사로잡는 필멸의 존재는 없습니다
그대 아름다운 얼굴이 완전한 평화를 누릴 때;
그 안, 모든 것이 성지인 곳서,

내 영혼은 사랑을 느끼게 되고, 내 동지인 하늘의 그녀도,
그녀는 하느님 낙원에서 태어났기 때문에
그 모든 아름다움을 지구에서는 볼 수 없다

이 잘못된 불공평한 세상, 날개는 지구에 묶여 있고
그녀의 사랑은 사랑으로 날아야 하는데,
아니, 죽음을 겪기도 하고, 갈증에 목마르기도 하고
죽음 없는 영혼이어도, 또한 영원한 것도,

더러운 시간만 섬긴다든가, 모든 감정은 시들어가고
사랑은 없고 무법천지 안에서 충동적인 욕망뿐이다
그 행위는 영혼을 죽일 뿐이다, 사랑은 더욱 공정해 야하는데
지상의 친구여, 천국에서도 공정한 세상이어야 한다
